Protecting Yolo County’s Future
With over 250,000 acres of prime farmland, Yolo County is the agricultural backbone of the capital region.
Our strong agricultural heritage runs deep. It’s not just our history, it is a vital part of our local economy and daily life. Our land sustains families, feeds communities, and drives innovation. But to keep agriculture thriving, we must protect it.
Yolo County has been growing fast, and without strong leadership, new development could slowly chip away at the very land that sustains us.
Our rural areas remain vulnerable, and future efforts must be designed with farmers and ranchers at the table. We can’t afford one-size-fits-all solutions that ignore agricultural needs.
I will:
- Prioritize the preservation of prime agricultural land.
- Push back against urban encroachment, and advocate for smarter, more-sustainable growth.
- Be a strong voice for farmers, farmworkers, and the agricultural industry.
- Advance effective, fair flood protection solutions that work for rural communities and protect both our farms and our cities.
- Pursue practical, creative ways to ease the burden of overregulation, which is making it harder for farmers to survive and prosper.
- Support farmworkers, who are vital to the industry but face high costs of living and tough working conditions.
- Encourage innovation—from ag technology to food processing and biotechnology—and support the vital research at UC Davis and other local institutions.
- Protect wildlife and natural habitat, recognizing that healthy ecosystems and a strong agricultural economy go hand in hand.
Our farms and agricultural industry do more than provide food. They fuel our economy, create open space, protect wildlife habitat, and offer natural floodplain benefits. They represent a way of life worth preserving. Land-use decisions should reflect our shared values: protecting agriculture, preparing for climate risks, honoring rural character, and ensuring that growth doesn’t come at the expense of one of our most valuable resources—our land.
